Rural Tourism and Nari Vandan Transforming Madhya Pradesh. Rising employment opportunities in villages; women becoming self-reliant and empowered

@Bhopal. Madhya Pradesh has made remarkable progress in the tourism sector over the past few years, with rural tourism emerging as a key pillar of this growth. This model—offering close experiences of natural beauty, folk culture, traditions, and the simplicity of rural life—not only attracts tourists but also strengthens the rural economy. It has especially opened new avenues for women, giving a fresh direction to their empowerment. In this context, initiatives like “Nari Vandan” have the potential to make this transformation even more impactful and far-reaching.

Rural Tourism: A New Foundation for Development
The primary objective of rural tourism is to connect village culture, traditions, cuisine, handicrafts, and lifestyle with tourism. Many villages in Madhya Pradesh are now gaining recognition on the tourism map. Tourists not only enjoy the natural surroundings but also experience the lives of local communities by staying with them.
This model has created new sources of income in rural areas. Where employment opportunities were once limited, people are now earning through homestays, guide services, folk performances, handicraft sales, and traditional food offerings. This has reduced migration and promoted self-reliance at the local level.

Achievement in Rural Tourism: Three Villages Receive National Recognition
Madhya Pradesh has achieved another milestone in promoting rural tourism. On the occasion of International Tourism Day, three villages—Pranpur, Sawarvani, and Ladpura Khas—were honored in the “Best Tourism Village Competition 2024” organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. Pranpur received the award in the Craft category, while Sawarvani and Ladpura Khas were recognized in the Responsible Tourism category.
The competition aims to promote tourism in rural areas and preserve cultural and natural heritage. This recognition highlights the rich traditions, cleanliness, community participation, and commitment to sustainable development in these villages.
Sawarvani attracts tourists with its natural beauty, clean environment, and authentic rural experiences, while Pranpur near Chanderi is known for its weaving tradition and handicrafts. These villages offer visitors a chance to closely experience local culture, cuisine, and art.
This recognition is a matter of pride not only for these villages but also positions Madhya Pradesh as a strong and inspiring model in rural tourism.

A New Identity of Women Empowerment: ‘MPT Amaltas’ and Pranpur Café
Madhya Pradesh is continuously setting new benchmarks in women empowerment. ‘MPT Amaltas’ in Pachmarhi is the state’s first hotel entirely operated by women, showcasing their leadership, capability, and self-reliance. Women’s participation in tourism is strengthening both their economic independence and their social standing.
Similarly, a women-run café in Pranpur village of Chanderi is emerging as an inspiring initiative. It is providing employment to rural women and giving a new direction to local tourism. Visitors enjoy local cuisine, especially the Bundeli thali, while experiencing rural life and the traditions of weavers.
These initiatives have enhanced women’s income, confidence, and social participation, proving that with the right opportunities and support, women can excel in every field. These efforts are not only a matter of pride for Madhya Pradesh but also a source of inspiration for the entire country.

Expanding Opportunities for Women
Rural tourism has had the most positive impact on women. Traditionally confined to household roles, they are now actively participating in economic activities—running homestays, preparing local cuisine, and showcasing their talent through handicrafts and folk art.
This participation signifies a broader social transformation. Women are gaining confidence, developing decision-making skills, and strengthening their role in families and society. Through Self Help Groups (SHGs), they are working collectively, increasing both income and recognition.
Joint Initiative by Police and Tourism Department for Women’s Safety
Ensuring women’s safety has become a top priority in Madhya Pradesh. A joint initiative by the police and tourism department is making tourist destinations safer and more attractive. With the vision of “Safe Women – Empowered Madhya Pradesh,” the state is moving toward establishing itself as a safe tourist destination for women.
Measures such as active police deployment, women help desks, CCTV surveillance, and quick-response systems are being strengthened. Training is also being provided to guides, hotel staff, and local communities to ensure sensitivity and prompt assistance in emergencies.
A safe environment will encourage more women to participate in tourism, strengthening both social empowerment and the state’s economy. This initiative boosts women’s confidence and builds Madhya Pradesh’s identity as a trusted destination for women travelers.
Nari Vandan: Accelerating Empowerment
“Nari Vandan” is not just a program but a comprehensive campaign for women’s dignity and empowerment. It encourages women to move forward in all spheres of life. When integrated with rural tourism, its impact becomes even more extensive.
Through this initiative, women can receive training, financial support, and employment opportunities. They can develop skills in hospitality, communication, management, and entrepreneurship, enabling them to manage businesses effectively and explore new opportunities.
Economic Empowerment and Self-Reliance
The combined impact of rural tourism and Nari Vandan is making women economically independent. As women begin to earn, their self-esteem grows, and they actively participate in family financial decisions.
This also strengthens the rural economy. Villages are becoming hubs of economic activity, and local products such as handicrafts, textiles, and organic foods are gaining new markets, promoting the “Vocal for Local” initiative.
Role of Women in Cultural Preservation
The rural culture of Madhya Pradesh is rich and diverse, with traditions like folk songs, dances, and handicrafts. Women play a vital role in preserving and promoting this heritage.
Through rural tourism, as visitors experience these traditions, their importance increases. Women are not only keeping these traditions alive but also passing them on to future generations, ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite significant progress, challenges such as lack of training, limited market access, digital illiteracy, and inadequate infrastructure remain in some areas.
Addressing these challenges requires continuous efforts and collaboration between the government, private sector, and society. With proper planning, Madhya Pradesh can become a national model for rural tourism and women empowerment
The synergy between rural tourism and Nari Vandan in Madhya Pradesh presents a powerful story of positive transformation. It is not only creating employment opportunities but also empowering women and making them self-reliant.
This initiative is strengthening the state’s economy and bringing positive social change. By providing respect and opportunities to women, Madhya Pradesh has carved out a new identity. With continued efforts, rural tourism and Nari Vandan can together become an inspiring model of development and empowerment for the entire nation.
